Although you could say the Urantia Book is religious, it is not a religion. There is no church or cult to join. The importance of balancing mind, body and spirit is stressed throughout its pages. Like a treasure chest, it is filled with gems of information. It goes deep into the fields of history, philosophy, science, religion, theology and sociology. Comprised of 196 "papers" that were indited between the years of 1928 and 1935, it was meticulously compiled by a staff of superhuman beings. Providing a startling perspective of human origins, history and destiny, it is an epochal revelation to humanity. Urantia, is the name our planet is known by to the rest of the universes. The humans into whose hands the papers were delivered are now deceased. The means by which the papers were materialized was entirely unique, and is not clearly understood by anyone.

The Urantia book has been in print since 1955, but no formal religion has sprung from it. It’s teachings are used by ministers, teachers and lay persons of various faiths to enrich the highest values in their own beliefs. Countless individuals around the world have developed deeply profound, personal spiritual lives as a result of studying it. But like all other sacred volumes, its contents should not be judged on claims of authorship or authority, rather upon the enhancements of the personal spiritual growth that is produced.

HOW I FOUND THE URANTIA BOOK

In the summer of 1970, I was a 19 year old actor and singer who was continuously seeking spiritual enlightenment. While staying at the famed Hotel Chelsea in New York City, I discovered The Urantia Book.

The Chelsea was always jamming with parties. You could wander the halls on each floor and find a couple of parties going on any given night. One night a friend and I were getting ready to go out on the town we were distracted by a loud party down the hall. The door was wide open so we walked on in. The room was really dark, which is a good thing at the Chelsea because none of the rooms that I was ever in, were ever really aesthetically pleasing to look at.

The party seemed a little dull so my friend suggested we leave. At that same time, my attention was drawn to a tall, thin, young black man in the corner who was quietly reading a very large blue book. At a first glance when I saw this guy I thought he might be Jimi Hendrix, but looking closer I could tell he was not. He seemed very out of place reading this big book and I was intrigued, wondering what this book was. I whispered to my friend, “See that guy over there? What’s that book he’s reading?”

“Oh that,” he said, “That’s The Urantia Book. It’s written by Celestial Beings, not humans.”

That response immediately got my attention. “You’re joking,” I said. “I’m going to go ask him about it.”

My friend grabbed my arm and said, “No don’t, he doesn’t like to be disturbed.”

“What?” I said, “That’s weird, why not?”

As we were walking out the door, I asked “How do you know he doesn’t like to be disturbed?”

“Because I’ve tried to talk to him about the book myself,” he said.

My mind was spinning and I became consumed with finding my own copy of this book. Perhaps it had all the answers I was looking for. Whatever, I needed to explore it further so I began searching for the Urantia Book in every bookstore I could find. It was elusive however, and not to be found, not even in New York. I was starting to feel that the guy at the Chelsea had the only copy in the world.

About a week after the party, I decided to go hang out in Central Park for the day. I took my guitar with me, and hung out in the Sheep Meadow. Towards the end of the day, I started meandering back towards the subway to make my way back to the Chelsea. As I was walking towards Central Park west, I saw a man sitting up on one of those big rocks in the park, playing his flute.

As I got closer, I noticed that it was the same guy that was at the party reading the Urantia Book! Sitting right next to him, opened face up, was the big blue book. I stopped for a few seconds to contemplate whether or not I should talk to him. I mean, here I am in a city of about eight million people. What are the odds of running into the same mysterious stranger twice? Hearing my friend’s admonition in my head, I decided not to bother him though and kept moving on. I just had to find that book.

Eventually, I found my own copy of the Urantia Book, and to this day I regret not having approached the young man. I have now been reading and studying the Urantia Book for over 38 years.  Without question, if I were stuck on a desert isle and was only able to take one book with me - the Urantia Book would be my choice.
